It was the end of summer, right when things were getting nice and golden outside. The smoke was finally clearing a bit, and the heat dome had lifted. Leaves had a tiniest hint of gold. You know.

My favourite time of year to ride.

Unfortunately due to some housing crisis stuff going on, I didn’t get much riding in. I did however get to see some amazing photos and video come out of Ultraromance’s neck of the woods. It was right around the time of the Nutmeg Nor’Easter. Those who know about the soft times ramble ride that is the Nor’Easter know why it’s something special. As I was being jealous of the wool and steel ride out east I looked around and thought to myself: “why not here?”

The Comox Valley is great for bikes. There are hundreds of km of bikeable roads, trails, sidewalks, and forestry paths in the area, plenty of swimmin’ holes, berry bushes and tons of ups and downs. A lot of people do bike here, but I think more people should.

Now I don’t want to copy Poppi’s thing. That’s special in its own right and should stay that way. I do want to show the party-pace minded cyclists that a good time can be had on the Island too, and it’s not just about räd mountain biking and cross racing.

I’m just starting to plan this venture. So far I have a name and a general idea. The first annual Dirtbag Cycles Rambler will be coming to the valley in 2022. I just need your help to make it something special.

I made a survey (which would make my communications 101 professor proud) to get your input. Other input is valid too. I want to make this not just for me, cuz I can ride around anytime I want. I want to make this for us. So please let me know if you think anything would be cool, if you can help out in any way, if you think it’s a dumb idea or how many swimming holes you want to check out. Survey is linked here.

Hope to see ya’ll when the world turns gold again!

BTW I fucked up and didn’t read the Survey Monkey fine print. The darn thing only let me see 10 responses. Otherwise I’d have to pay $128! No dice. If you’ve answered, I still have your responses. If not, go ahead :)

Dirtbag Cycles respectfully acknowledges that we are riding on the Unceded traditional territory of the K’òmoks First Nation, as well as the Coast Salish, We Wai Kum, We Wai Kai, Tla’amin and Homalco First Nations. We want to respectfully acknowledge these Indigenous peoples who have not ceded their lands under any treaty. Gila’kasla.
