This one’s pretty cool!

So a homeschool group in Royston, B.C. decided to do a cool project over COVID-19. They built a scale model of the solar system with the Earth being roughly the size of a golf ball. They made plywood signs with paintings of each of the planets and screwed them into power poles at their approximate distances from the “Sun.”

The result is a ride that shows really how big the solar system is.

The Sun is in Royston, just off Royston road. From there the first few rocky planets (including us) are within a few hundred metres. After that, things get a bit bigger. The distances between some of the planets are up to 5 km apart, the whole installation goes through Union Bay and Buckley Bay before ending just before the big hill after Fanny Bay.

The whole thing is 39.6 km, with just 100 m of climbing. However, if you’re cool like me you can start about 35 km away from Royston and do it in the pouring rain. Those are for bonus points though.

As always, tag @dirtbagcycles on Instagram with your ride photos, and we’ll share em on our story!

Dirtbag Cycles respectfully acknowledges that we are riding on the Unceded traditional territory of the K’òmoks First Nation, as well as the Coast Salish, We Wai Kum, We Wai Kai, Tla’amin and Homalco First Nations. We want to apologize for the ignorance of those who came before us, especially in this case. The perpetuation of a lie to sell real estate is not our goal, and we acknowledge that we still have not found the true place name of this mountain. We want to respectfully acknowledge these Indigenous peoples who have not ceded their lands under any treaty. Gila’kasla.
